What inspired you to take up design?

I don't know if there was one thing that inspired me. I think I always knew I wanted to end up in a career that was creative. Growing up, my siblings and I were always drawing or creating something and my parents were always supportive of our interests and gave us lots of opportunities to develop artistically.

It’s challenging to try and understand what captivates people and to translate that into design, but it’s so rewarding.

What do you love most about your career?

Seeing the joy that comes to people’s faces when you present them with something that’s better than what they could've imagined, is what motivates me. There’s nothing better! While I was in my final year of school, I had the opportunity to screen print some posters for a poster show/silent auction and mine was the first to sell out. It delighted me that so many people loved and were excited about the work I did. I think that’s when I realized the satisfaction that can come from making people happy. It’s challenging to try and understand what captivates people and to translate that into design, but it’s so rewarding.

What has been one of your favourite projects so far?

The first one that comes to mind is an illustration I did just over a year ago. I was asked to illustrate two characters for a children’s book concept that was about a young girl’s ode to her favourite blanket. I honestly don’t know if the book was ever finished to completion, but it re-sparked my love of illustration and motivated me to start doing more of it.

How does your faith play a role in what you do?

It’s important to me to be the kind of person that people can rely on and trust, and to be an example of Christ’s humility and selflessness. I think our generation is searching for the truth and willing to latch on to whatever or whoever is the most reliable. Having the ability to stand firm in your beliefs while showing authenticity, whether you're in a professional or personal setting, can make all the difference to people.

We believe God puts dreams and desires in our hearts. What is one of your biggest dreams?

My dream is to be able to work as an illustrator full-time. I’d love to illustrate for books or for magazines. To help put that into perspective, my childhood dream was to be the next Norman Rockwell.

And completely opposite, what is one of your biggest fears?

Losing the people that I love is my biggest fear. I’ve always been afraid of that. I’ve had to watch a few of my close friends lose either a mother, father or husband in the last couple of years and it’s been hard to watch them experience the type of pain and loss I so desperately hope never happens to me.

What helps you overcome that fear?

I think maintaining a close relationship with God keeps things in perspective. No one’s time on this earth is forever and being able to see the big picture of one day living in eternity with Christ makes the hardships of this life more bearable.

What would you tell your younger self?

Relax. Being shy and anxious is only a phase. I was a little worry-wart as a kid! I used to be terrified of literally everything because I hated not knowing what the future held. But you grow out of it and the more life you live the more wisdom you gain, the more friends you make, and the more you begin to enjoy this extraordinary, ordinary life —— I definitely stole that line from “About Time”. That movie gets me.

You live in a beautiful city, what’s does a perfect day off in Vancouver look like?

Waking up to sunshine! Meeting up with friends for coffee and good conversation, and taking a drive out to the mountains for a chance to re-charge would be a perfect day off for me. I feel very privileged to live in a city that’s so geographically ideal. I’ve literally got the ocean and the mountains within arms reach!
